AntennaModule

Our 5G Smartphone Architecture

•GMT has investigated and developed 5G smartphone with:

   - LTE MIMO, 4 antennas (tunable)

   - Sub6 MIMO, 8 antennas (FPC+cable or LCP+BTB)

   - mmW MIMO, 2-4 antennas (antenna module)

•GMT is not only a design house component but also a component supplier.

•For mmw antenna, more considerations have to be investigated:

mmW Module Product for Terminals (1st Generation)

•Our goal is to develop and productize mmw antenna modules for user equipment and CPE/Small Cell applications.

•GMT is working on integrated designs with advanced materials, which has more design flexibilities including:

    - 4-element or 8-element selections

    - Polarization diversity

    - High Tx/Rx gain

    - Almost 3-GHz bandwidth

For UE, we will have three models:

    - 24/26 GHz (n258 band).

    - 28 GHz (n257 band)

    - 37-40 GHz (n260 band)

mmW Antenna Placement

The limitation of the phased array is its coverage. It’s easier to place on the back side or the edges of the device. However, if on the edge, only the linear array can fit on left and right edges since the top and bottom are usually occupied by the cellular antennas.

•The final combined pattern should be well designed. If there are only two array antennas, perhaps orthogonal placement is a better choice.
